Montana Challenge - Once valued almost exclusively as a source of timber, mineral, and agricultural commodities, Montana’s natural resources are increasingly seen as key “quality of life” assets essential in attracting the people and businesses creating economic opportunity and prosperity.
American Farmland Trust
The over application of fertilizer is a significant cost to farmers and a major cause of water pollution. With the help of the Alex C. Walker Foundation, ACIC has developed the Nutrient BMP Endorsement that covers farmers who follow university recommendations for applying nitrogen and phosphorus on corn against any potential losses in yield.
Mercatus Center
Based on the Government Performance and Results Act passed in 1993, the project seeks to assist federal agencies’ efforts to produce greater public benefits at less cost. One of the key components of the program is an annual performance report scorecard evaluating results achieved by government agencies and reporting directly to the public.
Defenders of Wildlife
Defenders of Wildlife helped pioneer the use of economic incentives to promote protection of endangered species on private lands. In 1987, Defenders created a fund to compensate ranchers in the U.S. Northern Rockies for all verified livestock losses to wolves. The fund has since been expanded to cover loses due to both wolves and grizzly bears. A university study involving stakeholder groups is being conducted to determine: 1) the effectiveness of Defenders’ private compensation trust along with state-run programs in Idaho and Wyoming, and 2) examination of possible economic benefits of wolf reintroduction in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Brookings Institution, Center on Social and Economic Dynamics
Economic disruption is one of the goals of terrorism. By modeling possible outcomes from bioterrorism attacks, the project seeks to inform policy decisions and reduce the bioterrorism threat. The Walker Foundation provided a seed grant for developing powerful computer simulations graphically illustrating the effects of a bioterrorism outbreak of smallpox under various hypothetical conditions.
International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics (IFREE)
IFREE reports that experimental economics has become a "unique instrument for demonstrating - even to skeptics - the efficacy of decentralized market and incentive solutions to economic problems." The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics to Director, Vernon L. Smith for his pioneering work in experimental economics.
