Montana Site Visit 9-00
The Walker Foundation has supported the National Wildlife Federation in developing a market solution to the problem of overgrazing on federal lands. NWF has been able to retire 30 grazing allotments in the Yellowstone Ecosystem, totaling more than half a million acres. More recently, NWF has experimented with an auction concept to retire grazing permits on the C.M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. This approach establishes an important new national model for resolving chronic conflicts between wildlife and livestock. Take a photographic tour of grazing leases being considered for purchase and learn about the proposed American Prairie Preserve.
Palau Ecotourism and Fiseries Site Visit 1-07
Ten years ago Barrett Walker and his wife visited the Pacific island nation of Palau while on vacation. What they found was a pristine paradise threatened by industrial fishing combined with the early impacts of global warming. Following the visit, Barrett met with the Nature Conservancy to develop a long-term program for conservation finance designed to address the kinds of problems he encountered in Palau. Their return visit to Palau shows that ending overfishing and investing ecotourism-generated fees in conservation have produced positive results.
